Greater operational flexibility
With Alstom's Fuel
Flexibility Package, your Increasing demands are being placed on today's global gas turbine fleet to burn
□ lant will be able tO respond natural gas with higher C2+ (higher order hydrocarbons) contents and also with
greater, more rapid fluctuations in the C2+ content. As gas supply disruptions are
rapidly and Telia bly tO becoming more common and Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) shipments are ramping up
i ■ r I I globally, this trend is set to continue. With Alstom's Fuel Flexibility Package, your plant
Cnanging tuel markets. will be able to respond rapidly and reliably to these demands and have the agility to
take advantage of favorable commercial conditions for higher C2+ fuels on the spot
market.
CUSTOMER BENEFITS
• Reliable operation with
fluctuating C2+ contents
• Greater operational flexibility
for taking advantage of
opportunities on the fuel
spot market
BACKGROUND
During commissioning, Alstom's
advanced sequential combustion
system is optimised to provide the most
efficient and reliable operation for the
C2+ content expected over the next
operating interval. Excessive fluctu-
ations in the C2+ content away from
the original optimised set point may
lead to protective events and non-
optimised efficiency and power output.
When such fluctuations are expected,
both on-site and off-site support by
Alstom's combustion experts is required
for part load and base load mapping
and re-optimisation of the operating
concept for the new fuel composition.
THE NEW FUEL FLEXIBILITY
PACKAGE
Alstom has developed a new control
concept using fast response infrared
sensors to detect changing C2+
contents in the fuel. Whereas
traditional gas chromatographs have
response times of the order of 15
minutes, the 20 second response time
of infrared sensors allows near real-
time re-optimisations of the operating
concept for the current fuel
composition.

This package, including the system and
associated operation and control
concept, is fully validated in the Alstom
power plant in Birr, Switzerland, and a
standard option for any new
KA24/KA26. It is in continuous use in
markets where high C2+ fuels are
standard.
It has also been implemented as a
retrofit solution in the KA24/KA26 fleet.
