Today's energy challenges
As the global need for electricity increases, so does the expectation for clean, reliable
power. Utilities are under pressure from both governments and the public to reduce C02
emissions by integrating renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, into the
grid. One of the major challenges is that renewable energy production can be
unpredictable, making network operators hesitant to become dependent on elements
they cannot control.
In parallel, networks are ageing and more decentralized, becoming less efficient and
more congested as the quantity of energy circulating on the lines increases with the
energy demand. Both TSOs and DSOs need innovative ways of improving the grid's
flexibility, reliability and efficiency.
Our solution
Alstom has developped a complete and
smart battery storage solution,
MaxSine™ eStorage, based on years of
power electronics and AC substation
experience, as a competitive answer to
recent grid challenges. MaxSine™
eStorage solution helps customers tackle
issues such as load shifting and leveling,
renewable capacity firming and ancillary
services.
Specifically, MaxSine™ eStorage is a
power conversion solution with power
electronics and real-time control software
that interfaces batteries to the electrical
network. It thus controls the stored
power, optimising the charge or
discharge of the batteries according to
electrical grid needs.
Energy storage will give operators the
ability to 'save' electricity for future use.
This energy can then be made available
in seconds to handle peak loads, meet
seasonal requirements or be traded in
energy markets, all essential to Smart
Grid and Supergrid development.
