nnnnASSEMBLY (ABA)
nnnnDisk Drive
nnnnDESCRIPTION
nnnnThe Adsorbent Breather Assembly (ABA)
nnnnintegrates a breather filter, adsorbent pouch
nnnnfilter and a diffusion channel into a single
nnnnfilter assembly. A pressure-sensitive adhesive
nnnnlabel secures the filter over the breather hole
nnnninside the drive.
nnnnPRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
nnnnThe ABA is designed to provide protection
nnnnfrom particles, hydrocarbons, acid gases,
nnnnand the effect of water vapor, such as
nnnncondensation and corrosion. The filtration
nnnnmembrane removes particles from incoming
nnnnair. The adsorbent element is specially
nnnnformulated to control humidity and to adsorb
nnnnacid gases and hydrocarbons from internal
nnnnand external sources. The integral diffusion
nnnnchannel reduces the amount of hydrocarbons,
nnnnwater vapor, and acid gases entering the
nnnndrive from the surrounding environment and
nnnnthereby extending the life of the adsorbent.
nnnnThe most common adsorbents and their
nnnnassociated functions are as follows:
nnnn• Activated Carbon: Relative humidity
nnnncontrol and adsorption of hydrocarbons
nnnn• Chemically Treated Activated Carbon:
nnnnRelative humidity control and adsorption
nnnnof acid gases and hydrocarbons
nnnn• Silica Gel: Relative humidity control
nnnnINSTALLATION IN DRIVE
nnnnThe ABA is located on the inside of the drive. The filter
nnnnlocation should be in a low pressure area of the drive so
nnnnthat air can enter through the breather. Generally, the best
nnnnlocation is on the cover or the base casting as close as
nnnnpossible to the spindle.
