ULTRAPRECISION OPTICAL CMM
FOR R&D AND RETRIEVAL ANALYSIS IN ORTHOPAEDICS.
Retrieval analysis is fast becoming the most important tool for gaining understanding of failure
mechanisms in artificial joints. Our validated methodology* for orthopaedic retrieval measurement
uses non-contact profiling to generate 3 dimensional images with nanometre resolution.
The use of proven optical sensors leads to significant increase in measurement speed (compared to
alternative methods) while combining the accuracy of a roundness measurement with the coverage
of a CMM, without touching the component therefore avoiding damage to the bearing surface, this
making the instrument ideal for measuring retrieved components.
The RedLux Optical CMM provides unparalleled levels of 3D capture for wear measurement in
artificial joints. Mounted on an anti-vibration platform the machine is unaffected by environment
and gives on-screen results for analysis as soon as the measurement is completed. For example the
size of a wear scar on a hip joint can be seen immediately as demonstrated in the images below.

The colours on the data sets correlate to deviation from perfect form. For the head component
above the red shows the original, unworn surface and the deepest point of the wear scar is
depicted in black and shows a depth of 55 um. The corresponding cup for this joint is depicted on
the right where the location of the wear scar can be clearly seen and again the deepest point of
wear here is measured as 538 um.
These measurements will take around 2-3 minutes to execute and the data is available instantly.
The familiar Windows® interface enables the operator to control the instrument with ease. Data
analysis, automation and export of results for fast report generation are standard features on the
RedLux Optical CMM.
