High-REC High Rate External Circulation anaerobic reactor
Austep applies anaerobic technology with a flexible outline configuration, selecting the best solution and process for the
customer. In anaerobic process, other than UASB technology, Austep uses advanced reactors with high loads,
developed by ACS-Umwelttechnik Company. These reactors allow to operate with high loads (until 30 Kg COD/m3d)
reducing reactors' volume and obtaining high treatment efficiency.
The core part of the system is the anaerobic bacteria, which degrade the organic substances (soluble COD) to CO2 e
CH4 (biogas). The High-Rec® technology, in particular, have significant advantages.

PROCESS DESCRIPTION
High-REC® (High Rate External Circulation) technology is based on the
permanence of the bacteria into the reactor thanks to the granulation of the
biomass.
Similar to UASB reactors, the biomass aggregates to granular particles of
some millimetres, in natural way, that sediment rapidly and remain in the
reactor.
The wastewater flow is bottom/up, with an ascended flux by the bottom of
the reactor through a distribution system.
Soluble COD is quickly degraded and converted into biogas and upward
circulation is established.
The first separation settler, submerged in the reactor, is very efficient in
retaining the biomass in the first compartment of the reactor. In this way
the second compartment is like a real second stadium of treatment.
The treated effluent flows at the top of the reactor.
A part of the effluent is re-circulate in order to maximize the wastewater
mixing and raise the treatment efficiency.
