The ARoNite (Autotrophic Reduction of Nitrate) process is a fixed-film biological treatment

nnnn

technology for the removal of oxidized contaminants. ARoNite systems rely on naturally

nnnn

occurring bacteria that use hydrogen gas as an electron donor to reduce contaminants in the

nnnn

influent stream. The bacteria take carbon needed for cell synthesis from naturally occuring

nnnn

bicarbonate in water from the influent stream. Unlike competing RO an IX processes, AroNite

nnnn

does not create brine streams or other waste residuals. The resulting process is remarkably

nnnn

tolerant of nitrate variations in feed water quality and produces consistently high quality

nnnn

effluent.

A unique feature of the ARoNite process is its use of hydrogen to support a beneficial biofilm.

nnnn

To maximize performance and assure process safety, ARoNite systems use a specially designed

nnnn

sealed growth media which diffuses hydrogen gas directly to the biofilm. As a result, hydrogen

nnnn

is used at near stoichiometric (theoretical) rates. Hydrogen can be produced onsite and on-

nnnn

demand, completely eliminating issues with gas handling and storage. To further simplify

nnnn

operations, the entire process is fully automated to minimize operations and maintenance.

The ARoNite process uses a fixed-film bacterial culture to biologically reduce contaminants

nnnn

from the influent stream. At the heart of every system is the ARoNite module: serving as both

nnnn

a growth medium and hydrogen delivery substrate in support of the active biological culture.

The ARoNite system cultivates a naturally occurring bacteria culture on the surface of a

nnnn

proprietary membrane media. The autotrophic bacteria assimilate inorganic carbon from the

nnnn

alkalinity, phosphorus, and other trace nutrients directly from the influent stream to build cell

nnnn

mass. Nitrate from the influent stream is reduced using hydrogen gas as an electron donor

nnnn

In the respiration process to produce

harmless nitrogen gas and clean water.

Over time, cell mass is discarded from

the downstream filtration process.
