nnnnThe Need
nnnnThe sulfur recovery process requires
nnnna consistent quality of feed gas to
nnnnoperate most efficiently. Uncertainty
nnnnin feed stock quality increases with
nnnnchanging feed stocks, depleting sour
nnnngas wells and some processing unit
nnnnupsets. To help ensure maximum
nnnnrecovery efficiency, today's SRUs
nnnndemand a faster means of adjusting
nnnnfor input changes than is possible with
nnnnonly feed-back control. Continuous,
nnnnreliable, on-line analysis of critical
nnnnfeed gas components in sulfur
nnnnrecovery units provides process
nnnnengineers and operators with vital
nnnninformation for feed-forward control of
nnnnthe modified Claus process. Feed-
nnnnforward analysis can be performed
nnnnonce the sampling challenges unique
nnnnto the acid feed gas are overcome.
nnnnSampling the acid feed gas presents
nnnnunique challenges. First and foremost
nnnnis the toxicity of the feed gas due to
nnnnthe high concentration of hydrogen
nnnnsulfide and other sulfur-bearing
nnnncompounds present in the sample. The
nnnnsecond challenge is the high water dew
nnnnpoint that can be present in the sample
nnnngas. The third challenge of sampling
nnnnthe acid feed gas is the disposal of
nnnnthe analyzed sample. The sample gas
nnnncannot be vented to atmosphere and its
nnnnincineration typically results in significant
nnnnemissions of sulfur dioxide pollution.
nnnnWhat is required is a sampling
nnnnprobe that can simultaneously
nnnnextract a sample, maintain high
nnnnintegrity, prevent condensation, and
nnnnprovide a sample return point to
nnnncreate a truly closed-loop sampling
nnnnprocess.
nnnnThe Solution
nnnnThe Western Research® HAG
nnnnSampling Probe from AMETEK
nnnnProcess Instruments is designed to
nnnnmeet all of the sampling challenges of
nnnnthe acid feed gas. The HAG probe is
nnnna flexible, fully integrated, electrically
nnnnheated probe assembly designed
nnnnto be incorporated with the new
nnnnAMETEK Western Research models
nnnn931/932 high concentration H2S
nnnnanalyzers.
nnnnThe HAG Sampling Probe requires
nnnnonly a single process connection
nnnnfor both sample extraction and
nnnnreturn. This reduces installed
nnnncosts by eliminating the need for
nnnnadditional vent systems or taps in
nnnnthe process line. The HAG probe
nnnncontains integrated shut-off valves
nnnnthat allow for some probe servicing
nnnnwithout removal from the process. An
nnnnintegrated, serviceable membrane
nnnnfilter protects the downstream
nnnnanalyzer from entrained liquids. In
nnnnaddition, the HAG Sampling Probe
nnnnis temperature-controlled by an
nnnnintegrated electric heater to ensure
nnnnthat no sample condensation occurs
nnnnwithin the probe.
nnnnThe HAG probe provides the motive
nnnnforce necessary to circulate the
nnnnsample through the analyzer system.
nnnnSample is extracted and transported
nnnnthrough the probe and analyzer
nnnnsample system by a heated aspirator
nnnnbuilt into the probe's sample return
nnnnpath. This aspirator may be driven by
nnnnair, nitrogen, or steam, allowing for
nnnnflexible operation and safe sample
nnnntransport. In addition, the probe is
nnnncompliant with NACE MR0175 - 2002
nnnnfor use in sour gas service.
nnnnThe Western Research HAG
nnnnSampling Probe can be retrofitted to
nnnnthe Model 732 Feed Gas Analyzer.
nnnnThe features and flexibility of the
nnnnprobe enable its use in many other
nnnnnon-sulfur recovery applications.
