Permanent Magnet (PM) machines
have been used where simplicity
and cost effective solutions are
required. As the power electronics
are rapidly reducing costs and
increasing both performance and
power rating, PM machines are
becoming the high performance
solution.
No rotor windings means no
brushes, no exciter and no
automatic voltage regulator are
required.
No losses due to electrical
excitation of the rotor coils, so you
can enjoy a really efficient
technology. Being the rotor losses
not load dependant, a significant
part of losses is reduced, resulting
really high performance in a wide
range of loads.

As there is less heat to dissipate
because of the lower losses,
coolant requirements and machine
size are minimized. A really nice
power density is obtained, with
smaller sizes in many cases than
an induction or electrically excited
synchronous machine.
