Long lasting development results in success
The successful story of B&B-MAF in the PET FOOD- industry with SFB packing
The simple name SFB (Side gusset bag), the result of a long lasting trustful
cooperation between the machine manufacturer B&B-MAF of Hopsten, Germany,
and several companies engaged in ready-made products stands for a hightechnological development of a brand new mode of packing and the corresponding
machine equipment.
Originally, the basis was two paper bag types: the plate bottom bag (packaging from
0.5 to 8 kg) and the pinch bottom bag (packaging from 4 to 25 kg). This was the
beginning of replacing plastic as packing material with paper, gaining enormous
advantages in achieving:
barrier layers
tightness owing to sealed material connection
printability, multilayered with aluminium intermediate layer, etc.
resistance to tearing
design possibilities due to sealed seams
Machines for comparable packaging made from plastic existing at the market until
1998 were subject to a complex manufacturing process, each bag had been
produced from several webs. As the pre-manufacturing steps were already very
complex: printing, lamination, roll cutter, logistic and additionally several print
cylinders for one single bag size were necessary, development of an innovative
solution was the goal to achieve. The result is a side gusset bag, manufactured
longitudinally from a single material web. Although at first, no manufacturing
machines were available, the gained advantages were convincing:
imprinting of a single material web
simple, logistic handling of the roll material
extremely small material trimming
manufacture of small sizes (1-kg) as well as of big sizes (up to 25-kg) on one
single machine
cost savings by using inexpensive materials such as PE/PE
treatment of complex and very narrow size tolerances
high machine efficiency due to a two-web manufacture at high quality
assurance
customer-specific engineering due to functional progress
