nnnnSEWAGE EFFLUENT KIT
nnnnThe Palintest Sewage Effluent Kit provides a simple means of
nnnnchecking the quality of sewage effluents. It is used extensively
nnnnfor control testing at small sewage works. Based on simplified
nnnnmethods of sewage effluent testing, the kit contains tests for
nnnnthe essential quality control checks required for the day-to-day
nnnnoperation of sewage effluent treatment plants
nnnnIncreasing attention is being paid to the quality of sewage
nnnneffluents. This is coupled with the imposition of more stringent
nnnnquality standards. It is important that the condition of sewage
nnnneffluent discharges be checked to ensure they conform to
nnnnconsent limits. Similarly the importance of regular testing by
nnnnsewage works operators as a check on the efficiency of the works
nnnnis widely recognised
nnnnPalintest Sewage Effluent Tests have been developed to meet this
nnnnneed. Each of the tests is performed simply without the use of
nnnncomplicated equipment and are suitable without formal training in
nnnnwater testing and analysis.
nnnnPalintest Sewage Effluent Tests are based on those
nnnnrecommended by the Department of the Environment and the
nnnnWater Research Centre, and accord generally with the methods
nnnnlaid down in "Analysis of Raw, Potable and Waste Waters'1
nnnnpublished by The Stationery Office.
nnnnOrdering Information
nnnnSP 304 Sewage Effluent Kit
nnnn(complete kit containing tablet reagents and
nnnnequipment for all the tests)
nnnnPT 513 Optional double length Turbidity Tube (26 inch)
nnnnPT683 Thermometer. Range: -10° to +50°
nnnnThe kit contains: 300 Acidifying SE tablets; 300 Permanganate
nnnnValue tablets; 100 Universal pH tablets; 3 sample containers
nnnn(100ml); 2 plastic test tubes (10ml); 1 turbidity tube (13
nnnninches); 1 test tube brush (12cm); 1 thermometer (in case).
nnnnPERMANGANATE VALUE
nnnnRange: 0 - 30+
nnnnThe Palintest Permanganate Value test is a simplified version of
nnnnthe standard AO test for indicating the general quality of final
nnnneffluents. The test enables the Permanganate Value (PV) to be
nnnndetermined and the effluent classified as to its acceptability for
nnnndischarge.
nnnnPH TEST
nnnnRange: 4 - 8
nnnnChemical and biological reactions at sewage works are
nnnnprofoundly influenced by pH. A regular check on the sewage
nnnneffluent is therefore essential. A pH test will also check, for
nnnnexample, on the effect of acid or alkaline trade wastes in the
nnnneffluent flow. The pH test is carried out using a Universal pH test
nnnntablet in conjunction with a printed colour strip.
nnnnTURBIDITY AND SUSPENDED SOLIDS
nnnnRange: 5 - 500 JTU
nnnnThe Turbidity Test is designed to give a measure of the suspended
nnnnsolids content of the final effluent. It is also useful in following
nnnnthe day-to-day variation in the quality of sewage and effluent.
nnnnThe Palintest Turbidity Test uses a specially calibrated plastic
nnnntube. This provides the simplest possible method of performing
nnnnthis important test. Test kit SP 302 includes a tube graduated
nnnnat 30 to 500 turbidity units. A double length tube with additional
nnnngraduations from 5 to 25 turbidity units is optionally available.
nnnnTEMPERATURE
nnnnRange: -10 - +50 °C
nnnnA check should be maintained on the temperature of effluent
nnnndischarges and these should always be close to ambient
nnnntemperatures. A check is particularly important on industrial
nnnneffluents where heated processes are involved. Kit SP 304
nnnncomes complete with a -10° to +50° thermometer complete in a
nnnnbrass protecting case (PT 684). Replacement thermometers are
nnnnavailable in the event of breakage (PT 683)
nnnnPROBABLE BOD, COD AND TOC
nnnnIt is possible to derive an indication of the Biochemical Oxygen
nnnnDemand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Total
nnnnOrganic Carbon (TOC) from the result of the Permanganate Value
nnnntest. This is based on the relationship between these measures
nnnnof organic pollution obtained experimentally for domestic sewage
nnnnand effluents
