nnnnFILTRATION SOLUTIONS FILTER (ALF)
nnnnDisk Drive
nnnnDESCRIPTION
nnnnThe Adsorbent Label Filter (ALF) is comprised
nnnnof a filtration membrane, adsorbent element,
nnnnand pressure-sensitive adhesive for securing
nnnnthe filter to the inside of the drive.
nnnnPRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
nnnnThe ALF is designed to provide protection
nnnnfrom hydrocarbons, humidity, and acid
nnnngases in a thin label format. The high
nnnnefficiency filtration membrane encapsulates
nnnnthe adsorbent element while remaining
nnnnpermeable to gaseous contamination. The
nnnnadsorbent element is specially formulated to
nnnncontrol humidity and to adsorb acid gases
nnnnand hydrocarbons from internal and external
nnnnsources. The most common adsorbents and
nnnntheir associated functions are as follows:
nnnn• Activated Carbon: Relative humidity
nnnncontrol and adsorption of hydrocarbons
nnnn• Chemically Treated Activated Carbon:
nnnnRelative humidity control and adsorption
nnnnof acid gases and hydrocarbons
nnnnSilica Gel: Relative humidity control
nnnnINSTALLATION IN DRIVE
nnnnThe ALF is attached to the inside of the drive and is ideally
nnnnsuited for applications requiring a low-profile filter. Because
nnnnthe adsorption mechanism is diffusion-based, the label can be
nnnnlocated anywhere inside the disk drive assembly.
nnnnWhen using an ALF filter, it is recommended that diffusion
nnnnprotection be incorporated into the drive. Diffusion protection
nnnnreduces the amount of hydrocarbons, water vapor, and acid
nnnngases entering the drive from the surrounding environment.
