Introduction

The CSC >
TM MIG Weld Process Controller (controlledshort circuit) was developed to virtually eliminate
welding spatter and increase welding travel speeds
on thin materials. The process is capable of produc-
ing cold wire feed GTAW (TIG) quality welds at GMAW
(MIG) welding travel speeds. The system incorpo-
rates the following features:Microprocessor controlՕHigh speed, high precision stepper motors

How does it work?

The CSC >
TM control coordinates the feeding directionand speed of the electrode with the level of welding
amperage delivered by the power supply. The
process has two primary phases - arc phase and
short circuit phase. The control monitors the voltage
between the electrode and the work to determine
which phase the process is in at any given time. If the
voltage is above the "Voltage Hi" threshold setting,
the process is in the arc phase. If the voltage is below
the "Voltage Lo" threshold setting, the process is in
the short circuit phase.The control adjusts the level of current being deliv-ered from the welding power supply based on the
phase of the process. Each phase, arc and short,
are divided into three segments - start, pulse and
final. These three current segments for each phase
are used to control the bead shape and size based
on the application.The arc phase is the phase during which heat isgenerated to melt the base metal and the filler
material. The molten droplet is deposited in the short
phase when the wire makes contact with the weld
puddle. During the short circuit created by the
droplet of filler material, the voltage drops below the
voltage "Lo" threshold and the controller starts to
retract the wire to clear the short.The controller senses the short has cleared when theprocess voltage rises above the Voltage Hi thresh-
old, and the wire is retracted to the preset arc length
level.Once the arc is again established, the control beginsfeeding the electrode toward the welding puddle
and the cycle repeats. >
